A Boy and A GirlNot far from where The Devil's looking glass had been destroyed was a large town, and within this town lived a boy and a girl whose houses had been beside each other their entire lives. The boy was named Kay and the girl was named Gerda.

Their houses were identical in every way. From the front room there was a view of a brick wall, and from the kitchen one could see a fire escape, but from Gerda's room an entirely different view could be seen, for her window looked directly at its own twin: another window exactly the same size and the same colour, but this room belonged to her childhood friend, Kay.

There once was a curious schoolboy named Wellesley Grey. He knew this of himself because he shortly realised he was in a corridor as part of a queue of children dressed in uniform, and also that a label inside his collar bore the name "Wellesley Grey". The name was also upon his schoolbooks and the satchel that contained them, and not moments before a blond boy from behind had slapped him on the back and said "Wellesley! Fancy that!" before launching into a conversation about how strange it was to be above the surface again.
